In that riff on Reginald Rose's classic teleplay-turned-movie, a bunch of male jurors should determine unanimously whether she is"fuckable" enough to be on TV, as the elongated skit brilliantly peels back all of the layers of misogyny which have dogged her increase out of stand-up comic to TV, and today, film celebrity.
Back in I Feel Pretty, the humor is flatter, using the exact same a couple of jokes playing over and above, like: Renee says something about how sexy she is, whomever in the area looks at her like she has lost her mind, then they shrug and keep with the spectacle. Her character's development is strange, too. Following her mind bulge, she has abruptly lost all career ambition and can be pleased to be a secretary at Lily LeClaire and nothing else, for a certain reason.
And she gradually awakens from afar to asshole because the movie progresses, dismissing or putting down other average-looking folks, including her best friends, played with Busy Philipps and Aidy Bryant--yet another example where the script ignores logic for the interest of ginning up half-hearted battle in which it does not require it. The smartest place is Williams, whose modest but strong Avery could have easily been a wicked, stuck-up antagonist but rather becomes an ally.
To the film's credit, it will not pit women against each other but instead has them build up one. Yet her narrative is regrettably undercooked. Also undercooked is a tricky evaluation of the way that beauty manufacturers lead to society's screwy expectations of attractiveness, especially in an awkward inspirational speech which doubles as a shill for the Lily LeClaire brand.
